Specified domain does not exist

the upgrade process was troubled to say the least.
Initially if failed. I ended up performing a repair
install of XP on the upgrade installation. I finally was
able to complet the installation. I created the user
accounts, but when I tried to login I get a logon message:

"They system cannot log you on due to the following error:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be
contacted."

As far as I know I did not set this system up on a domain.
As you can see the message does not specify the name of
the domain. This is a home system on a 2 computer network
(the reason for the upgrade was that Me would not pick up
an IP address from the router).

Please help.

check your network devices for xp compatiblity this is
often a problem with the network card.

that being said your sol at this point, slave the drive if
you didnt backup the data or parallel install and recover
the data.

then clean install xp.

if no data to worry about do a new install leave current
file system intact and overwrite the windows folder.
