I'm experienceing the problem outlined in this article.

The shortcut (.lnk file) is returned instead of the file or the folder that
is referenced by the path in the shortcut in the Open or in the Save dialog
box in Windows XP

I got the hotfix from MS and when I try to install it, I get a message
telling me the service pack on my PC is too new, and that I don't need to
install it. Damn!

Other than the .exe hotfix, there's one other file I downloaded with the
hotfix.zip that is a self-extractor that unzips to a folder -
symbpls/dll/comdlg32.pdb - but I don't know what to do with a .pdb file.

So, any advice? MS says this is it for me, or I have to spend $35 to get
crappy XP working. Linux sounds better every day. What can you tell me?
