Broken *.lnk file association

Since downloading and installing an update for Internet Explorer 7.0, I have
been unable to open a url in any non-Microsoft program. Instead, clicking on
the link produces the following error message:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

I have tried finding something in Folder Options where it appears that
everything is in order (Internet shortcut is already associated with IE).
Furthermore, I have already tried downloading the LNK file association fix
from Doug Knox (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm)...but no luck.
Suggestions anyone?

p.s. I am having no such problem on my backup computer on which IE has not
been updated.

..lnk files are Shortcuts to files and folders. .url files are Internet
Shortcuts.

1. Download FileExtInfo.zip
2. Unzip FileExtInfo.zip
3. Open FileExtInfo.exe.
4. In the left hand pane, scroll down to .LNK and click on it.
5. Click on View associations for this file type button.
6. FileExtInfo.txt will be created on your Desktop.
7. Compare to the info below and/or post back with what your FileExtInfo.txt
shows.
