Hi:

I have two maxtor atlas IV 10K 36GB 68pin on the adaptec 39320R SCSI
controller and when i bootup it does not see either of the drive. my system
conformation is:

Iwill dp533 dual xeon motherboard
2 x 2.4 GHZ xeon processors
PNY QuadroFX 1000
4x 512MB kingston hypex pc2700
adaptec 39320R SCSI RAID controller
2x Maxtor atlas IV 10K 36GB
adaptec 1200A Ide RAID controller
2x 200GB WD IDE drives
sony CDR
pioneer DVD 4x Rcorder

I set the drive with the terminator to ID0
and the second drive in the chain ID1
I would appreciate any help with this.

thank you in advance

The last drive in the chain should be the terminated one. A SCSI chain must
be terminated at each end. Usually your controller will provide termination
on it's end and you'll either need a terminator on the other end of the
cable or your last drive will need the jumpers/shunts set to terminated. So
if the drive you have set to ID0 is the first on the chain (in the middle of
the cable) don't terminate it. Terminate the one on the end of the chain.
If you still have trouble, try only hooking up the terminated one to ensure
it is being seen. Good luck!

Only one terminator allowed on a cable.
It must be on the last drive on the cable.

More modern drives no longer let you terminate them via jumpers.
In any case, Atlas IV LVD's don't have the option
if the drive you have set to ID0 is the first on the chain (in the middle of
the cable) don't terminate it. Terminate the one on the end of the chain.

In alt.comp.hardware.pc-homebuilt, Msg ID: <[email protected]>
Terminator must be on the last connector on the cable.

If that's the way you get it onto the last DRIVE fine..
I have drives where the terminator(s) are on the DRIVE.
Should I put them on the connector too? -:)
I think my scanner has them built in too..
It's on a card that has internal and external ports.
I think there are TWO ends to the SCSI "chain."
Makes sense to me..
It's all about characteristic impedance of cables.
