Asus P5WDG2-WS and Marvell onboard LAN strange problem

After installing an additional U320 SCSI hard disk and rearranging the
other HDs on the 2 installed Adaptec 29160 and 29320 SCSI controllers,
my Windows XP x64 edition froze during startup.

Reinstallation of Win XP x64 did not solve the problem but it appeared
that upon installing the Marvell Yukon onboard LAN driver (yk51x64.sys)
the system would freeze. After the fresh Win XP x64 install the Intel
Chipset drivers were installed first and subsequently the Marvell Yukon
driver.

Actually, the driver could be installed if the Ethernet adapter was
disabled in the device menu first, but enabling it after driver
installation would also cause the system to freeze, i.e. it seemed that
actually switching on the adapter caused this problem.

Before installing the additional hard disk, the LAN adapter worked
fine. My guess was it was a power issue, so I physically disconnected
all the hard drives without an OS, but to no avail. The PSU is a 600W
Seasonic.

Could there be physical damage to the motherboard after installing the
additonal HD, or is a driver issue more likely?

Base System:
Asus P5WDG2-WS, 1 GB Kingston DDR2, ATI X1900XT, Soundblaster Audigy 4,
2x SCSI adapters
Storage System:
Adaptec 29160:Maxtor Atlas V + Maxtor Atlas 10kII
Adaptec 29320: Fujitsu MAX3036NP + Fujitsu MAW3073NP + Maxtor Atlas
10kIII

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

You reset the ECSD (configuration data)?
You reset the CMOS?
Disable the OB lan/sound from the bios, then install windows. Enable them
afterward.

Hi Jad,

The problem was the PCI-X Adaptec 29320, which disables the onloard LAN
chip for some reason. There were some people on the Asus.com forum who
had the same problem. Unclear why this didn't happen before, since I
have been using the PCI-X card from day 1. I installed an old 10/100
Realtek NIC and things are fine. Thanks for you advice.
