the requested operation failed importing pst files

1). When I try to import a PST file I get a "The requested operation failed"
error in outlook 2007.
2). I need to press alt-F4 to close outlook instead of the normal way of
selecting the X in the top right corner. I cannot do anything with the three
choices - minimise, maximise or close.

Since importing is never the correct way to transfer Outlook data, one
wonders why you are using it. Why the operation might fail would require you
to post some actual information. You've posted none. Simple things like how
you created the PST file, how you transported it, and how you are accessing
it would be the most basic information you should provide.

Many thanks for this.
1) Firstly, I attempted to add a PST file from the Tools/Account
Settings/Data Files dialogue box. This failed with a "Requested operation has
failed" message. I then attempted to import and that also failed. After the
initial installation of Outlook, I created all my PST files on a seperate
drive/folder from where Outlook is installed so as to avoid accidental
deletion if my OS needs re- installation. I use Outlook 2007 to access all my
emails. Hope this is enough info to go on. Sorry I can't be more explicit
with this post.

Ok I used the following methods to create a data file

1. I clicked File and then selected Data File Management.

2. Under the Data Files tab, I clicked Add.

3. In the New Data Files dialogue box under types of storage, I selected
Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst).

4. I then clicked OK.

5. In the Create or Open Outlook Data File box that appeared, I browsed to
the location that the file will be saved in.

6. In the File name box, I typed the name of the file.

7. Then clicked OK.

8. In the Create Microsoft Personal Folders dialog box, I selected the name
to be displayed in Outlook for the data file in the Name box.

9. Clicked OK.

10. Received a,â€Requested Operation Failed†error.

This was the point at which I was expecting the file to appear in the
Account Settings under Data Files. It should be from there that I can access
it with Outlook. E.g. It should appear in the Folder List within Outlook when
I open it. I am now at the point of re-installing Outlook as a last resort.

That's not the same problem you posted before.
You're using too many steps. You did one of them wrong.
Just use File > New > Outlook Data File... and make your selections.
The file will then appear in your Folder List. You can then move it wherever
you want to after you close Outlook.

Thank you for your response. However, your suggestion, after using File > New
Outlook Data File, that - The file will then appear in your Folder List -
didn't happen. I tried twice the second time after closing outlook and
reopening and still nothing. Its looking increasingly like a re-install, or
does that last step - File > New > Outlook Data File require a reboot?
Thank you for your patience

A reinstall would solve nothing. Look for error messages. I suspect you are
still not following the correct steps. What you describe simply does not
happen for anyone else.

Alex S

I have been having the same problem as the OP for over a year. I am using Outlook (as part of Office XP) under Vista. However, note that this problem did not arise when I first installed Outlook under Vista.

Historically, at the end of each year I would use Outlook (from Office XP) to create a new PST file (as a calendar-year archive). This worked without problem until I tried to archive my 2007 mail at the start of 2008.

I would typically go to "File... Data File Management... Add..." and follow the obvious steps to create a new PST file.

However, on specifying the chosen filename, I now get the error "The requested operation failed.".

I also get the same error if I try to add an existing PST file to my Outlook. On specifying the existing PST file, which is not corrupted and has always worked in the past, the same error is generated.

Interestingly, I did not know about the "New... Outlook Data File..." option until I read your post. Intriguingly, this also fails at exactly the same step, but the error is slightly different: "The operation failed." The error box is also different - it is not a standard Vista error box with the text rendered/antialiased by Vista itself (as above), but is in simple-looking text apparently in the same format as the rest of Outlook.

Note that when I installed Outlook originally, I was able to use exactly this method to add 11 PST files to my Outlook, all of which are still there and working fine. Up until January 2008 I was able to create, add and remove PSTs at will from my Outlook. Since then I have been entirely unable to either create a fresh PST or add an existing PST to my Outlook.

I hope this is detailed enough to help, and that you can point me in the right direction.

Thank you.
