the printer subsystem is unavailable

I recently upgraded from win98 to win2000. I have plenty
of memory and a 1.0ghz processor. Prior to the upgrade I
wasn't having any problem using my printer, but now I keep
getting the message "the printer subsystem is
unavailable". any suggestions?

The print spooler service needs to be started.
