Print subsystem unavailable

Randall

Came in this morning and all my printers are missing from
the printers folder and when I try to add a printer I get
the following message:

"Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of
resouces. The print subsystem is unavailable."

Any thoughts... no new software has been added or deleted.

Every Knowledge Base Article that refers this issue
states the Print Spooler application must "merely" be
restarted. The application is running and setup
properly. The system is only missing the .net framework
in terms of patches/updates. I've cleaned the registry
with systemworks, and tried every method of
starting/restarting the service as depicted in the KB
articles. (this includes the net start...) Im not
totally out of ideas, but if someone's got an idea, a
response would be highly appreciated.

thanks

I had what sounds like the same thing happen to a computer
recently. I am not sure where I found the tip, but it
worked. I went to the registry key:

HKLM\system\current cntrl
set\control\print\environments\windowsNTx86\Drivers\

and deleted all the "version" folders below Drivers. It
did the trick for me.

Good luck.

That question has been asked here many times before. Here is one way to
search the group:
<http://groups.google.com/groups?&q=...resources"&hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8>
Here is another:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/technologies/fileandprint/print/redir-newsgrp.asp>
....and here is one of the suggested solutions.

This problem is caused by installing Office 2000 on a Windowss 2000 pc.
Fax drivers are installed which drop the Printer Services.

From my own experience this problem can also occur when applying any
upgrades using Windows update utility on a Win2k pc (Not sure about
XP).

To start the service again do the following:
Go to Start
Select Run
Type cmd
in the DOS window type - NET START SPOOLER
press enter

Go to Printers
Select View and select the REFRESH

Hope that helps
