The nasty software booted on me!

So I upgraded to SP2. Then I made sure I had the latest updates. Then
yesterday a new update came in. I installed it, but didn't want to boot my
machine. A new nag message kept popping up reminding me that I had to boot
to complete the update. I kept turning it off. I went to bed. I awoke and
found that Windows had taken it upon itself to boot my machine. How
absolutely nasty can you be!!

Hi

Was this the IE update? If so, your system will need to rebooted to
complete the install. Not doing so 'could' cause problems. Or you saying
that your system rebooted itself after the update had been completed? If
that's the problem, have a look in the Event Viewer - there may be an entry
that will show what problem caused it.

Maybe your computer crashed and rebooted itself - Power surge, RAM etc could
cause it.

Anyway, what were the after effects of this boot?

Whatever was yesterday's update.

I know that!

Never in the past did one have to immediately reboot.

No. What I wrote was after the update I declined to reboot. Then every 10
minutes or so it nagged me reminding me I needed to boot to complete the
update. I knew that. Each time I declined. But about three hours after I
left the machine and went to bed it booted itself.

Okay. I looked at the event log. I find:

The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of DELL-2GHZ for the
following reason: No title for this reason could be found
Minor Reason: 0x2
Shutdown Type: reboot

Hi

That 10 minute 'nag' is for the completion of the update. The reboot may be
needed to replace/update various system files.

Why did you make sure you had the latest upgrades? Did you upgrade
something that was working fine before?

The implied advice in your message--not to upgrade something that
has no problems--is fine for lots of types of software. But I
think it's terrible advice when you're talking about operating
system updates, many of which are security-oriented.

Security updates are very important to install, regardless of
whether or not it was "working fine before."

If you install and it needs to reboot to finish the process, then you
need to let it. The option is just so you can tidy other things up and
get to a convenient moment; not so you can wait a week or so with the
job half done.
