the innovative project pc games need

when i read John Carmack saying we would like to see pc games
using quake3 engine in a commercial cd retail product and that
quake3 engine is being released under the gpl i immediatly
had this idea

using John Carmack vision and now that quake3 is free for use
i though about the following project

stand alone pc game titles using quake3 engine done by startup
developers elected by pc gamers themselves and funded by money
from the pc game sales

the system would be simple
anyone would be challenged to make a full stand alone game using
quake3 engine
amateur programmers, gaming creator students, the mod community
in general and even professionals cause i feel this is a great
financial and professional opportunity to everyone
they would create a playable beta/preview with a minimum of
gameplay to do a fair evaluation
then it would be made available to the public with freedom to
distribute for free via internet, magazines and among friends
them there would be a voting by pc gamers to choose the titles
that deserved funding to create a full version
that full version when completed would be published commercially
in dvd-rom
a percentage of the sales profits from this first release would
go to a fund to finance the following titles elected and so on
and if successful which i'm sure it would be in a couple of years
dozens of titles of all types would be released and many startup
developers should have a chance to enter the market and show
talent and creativity

obviously the first game released needed other kind of funds
cause only after the first game is released can the fund from
the sales be created

so we needed
startup fund to finance the first game chosen by us
a group that would overall supervise the project with a website
dedicated exclusively for this project and this website would
not only host the distribution of the demos themselves but also
the actual voting

we could decide to set aside 10% of the sale profits for that
fund to be used to finance all future projects chosen by us pc
gamers and 50% would be for the developers themselves
it would be roughly like this the distribution of profits
.. 50% for the developer
.. 25% for the publisher
.. 15% for the retailer
.. 10% to create a fund financing future games

the fund would be very important cause it would be a way to
actively fight piracy cause if pc gamers know every time
they are buying a titles is not only to give profits but
also to help financing future titles from startup developers
then they have an extra incentive to not pirate the game

and quake 3 is still a very powerful engine
try and play any of the games using it even nowadays and you
will agree they are still great so the engine has enormous
potential
and lets not forget the most important... games are mostly
about gameplay and not graphics

although quake 3 is a graphic engine made for a fps it can
be easily used in any type of game like strategy, adventure
role playing or driving
the project would need to have all kinds of games, all!

the format and standard i would like applied to the games
from this project would be:
.. games based in quake3 engine
.. games focus on single player with multiplayer as bonus
.. games coded for windows win32/opengl/directx
.. games not needing neither latest version of windows or
latest version of directx to be able to play
.. games in dvd-rom format
.. games sold in retail stores
.. games sold in the cheap plastic dvd type case
.. games manual only electronically inside the dvd to keep
cost down
.. games tech support only by the community themselves
.. games price at release no higher than 19.99 bucks
.. games with no copy protection
.. games with no need to have dvd inserted in drive to play
.. games with no serial number
.. games that would run immediately and directly from the dvd
.. games that would not write anything to the registry
.. games that wouldn't need the usual windows install but a
simple copy/paste if you wanted to run it from your hard
disk

what would this kind of project improve in pc games?
the quick answer is everything!

1. no need for more expensive hardware upgrades
quake 3 is based on a technology that does not require
expensive hardware or upgrades so games using it could
be played by almost every pc gamer with no need to spend
more in hardware

2. the best way to fight piracy
games would have a very low price cause they are more
cheap to create and with the added incentive of 10% of
the profits would go to a fund to help create future
titles so every pc games buying a game would know he was
also helping to create the next game he would play so a
reason not to pirate the game

3. bring new blood to pc games
opening up pc games to new developers that for sure will
bring new and fresh ideas much needed in a somewhat
saturated industry

4. pc games again affordable
with low price titles at release and no need to spend in
expensive hardware or software upgrades the pc would again
be the most open, affordable and democratic of all gaming
platforms available

5. let pc gamers decide what they want to play
with a system that would put much power in pc gamers to
decide what titles they want to play will obviously not
only improve the pleasure pc gamers have but also make
they feel there are a part of the industry and they can
decide

6. making pc games again popular and friendly
the key word is pc gamers first, this is what this project
would be all about, "pc gamers first", low price, no need
for more expensive hardware upgrades and the very important
no copy protection or abusive technologies but everything
made with the pc gamer in mind: "pc gamers first" that
would be the catch phrase!

this is good for everyone! and everyone would gain with it
.. pc gamers
will have more titles at low prices to choose from without
needing to make expensive hardware upgrades to play, and
the opportunity to play games from different creators and
actively decide what titles should be published
.. retailers
will have another line of budget pc game titles to sell but
this time knowing pc gamers are behind it and the titles are
high quality and will sell very well and become very popular
.. developers
will have a "school" to watch the work of new talents so they
can hire for their next high profile big project
.. publishers
will have the pc again as a gaming platform in focus boosting
overall sales including their own releases

so with this inspiring "pc gamers first" catch phrase now
what we need is a entrepreneur with an adventures spirit
and whiling to invest in pc games
isn't there some one out there with love for pc games and
whiling to take a chance and make a difference?
please spread the word so we can find him

this is the project pc games need right now!
this is the true revolution pc games need
long live pc games!

It sounds like a really great idea - the only thing is, would there be any
way to get these games using my steam account?

Damn - I thought about that kind of reply, but you beat me to the punch.

Why waste time writing this drivel when you could be using this
valuable time developing the game(s) yourself ? Demonstrate
your real talents (if you have any, other than writing pointless
newspostings) and LEAVE THE REST OF US IN PEACE.
