The Guest Account and Shared Folders (remote)

I have two computers running a home network and there are shared folders on
one PC which have passwords for different levels of access which I have never
had any problems with. However recently I have been unable to access these
drives, and it seemed to start when I turned off my Guest account on my main
PC. Why is this, seeing as I know that in XP Home, and Pro that the Guest
Account is not actually disabled when switched off. Why is this happening,
it seems strange, as if I remove the access (password) protection, it works
okay.
I'm going to switch the Guest account back on temporarily just to confirm
that this is the cause. I don't want to have to leave the Guest account on,
as it is not used. If anyone can inform me of a way round this, a
workaround, or more importantly an explanation for this oddity I'd be
grateful. One more thing, irrespective of this shared guest problem, say one
turns off the Guest account, or is planning to, how can you slap a password
on it in XP home ?

Sorry if what I said was a little confusing, to clarify.

I am using XP Home and Windows 98
Windows 98 Machine is broadband-connected
XP Home is my main PC.
Now about that folder-level password protection, when I share folders for
use on a network (this is usually using Win98) how it is done is by
rightclicking on a folder - going to sharing tab and checking the option
share as, or to that effect. It also provides options to apply read-only and
full access share permission rights via passwords, basically you can specify
the access type with the additional option of setting passwords for the two
different permissions (read-only / full). This is what I mean, its a network
sharing feature, found in Windows 98. Now I have set passwords for both
read-only and full access for shared drives and normally I can access them
fine from XP machine, but since I've switched off my Guest account, entering
the correct passwords don't work, the login box just keeps appearing and
doesn't do anything and so I can't access my shared drives on the Windows 98
computer. Now why is this ?

And secondly, can I apply a password to the Guest account itself ?
Sorry, I seem to have explained that in a long-winded way, again.........
