I get this error message when I attempt to open an attachment from AOL
e-mail.

This all started about a month ago. I don’t have a clue what has changed. I
don’t know if AOL has made a change or if something in my “MS Outlook†has
changed.

I can open the attachment in "Outlook Express" but not in "Outlook" I only
have this problem with e-mail from AOL.

I am using "Outlook" 2003.

I found the solution for this at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;839804. This article
offers several solutions..the ones that worked for me were:

Clear the forms cache
There are different methods that you can use to clear the Outlook forms
cache. Each method has advantages and disadvantages.
• Method 1
Microsoft recommends that you use the Clear Cache method. To do this, follow
these steps:
1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Other tab.
2. Click Advanced Options.
3. In the Advanced Options box, click Custom Forms.
4. In the Custom Forms box, click Manage Forms.
5. In the Forms Manager box, click Clear Cache.

• Method 3
You can also rename the Frmcache.dat file. Do not do this as your first
attempt to resolve a problem with the forms cache because the Frmcache.dat
file may contain information about other forms. However, if your other
efforts to clear the forms cache have failed, you can rename the Frmcache.dat
file and then restart Outlook.
Hope this helps.

Vicky,
Thanks for the information. I tried "Method 1 without success. (There was no
change). Method 3 (from what I read at Microsoft) looks to be extremely
risky. I need to look at other options before I take this step. There is no
guarantee that this is the answer and I could end up with a real problem
instead of a nuance.

There appears to be many users having the same problem and I don't
understand why Microsoft hasn't come up with a published fix. Something they
know will work without the user taking undue risk to his computer.

Thanks again for your efforts. Please let me know if you learn more about
the problem.

I was concerned too, but this user had never created forms in Outlook, so I
took a chance. He's working great with no problems.
Thanks

Vicky,
I don’t mean to wear this subject out, but I still have some concerns. What
is causing this problem in the first place? Is the user you were referring to
doing anything different to prevent the problem from reoccurring? It doesn’t
make sense to have to modify the register (dangerous place to be)
periodically to keep Outlook running. If “Method 3†was successful for your
friend, then it should work for me also.

Thanks again,
Marv

I didn't edit the registry. I did step 1 first, when that didn't work, I did
step 3 which is reanme the Frmcache.dat file. I renamed it to
frmcacheold.dat, restarted the machine and it worked fine. I checked with the
user late last week and he was still working fine, no more error messages. I
feel pretty confident it'll work for you. Good luck..

Vicky,
What can I say but, THANK YOU....THANK YOU ....... THANK YOU.... It
WORKED!!!!!

That was so simple and I feel so gratefully stupid. Don't ask me why I was
thinking I had to modify the registry. Somewhere I got off the track or on
the wrong one.

I have to ask but how did you know renaming the frmcache.dat file, would
solve this problem. And why does this become a problem in the first place?
(You don’t have to reply or answer this, but I’m so relived you resolved the
problem.)
Have you noticed there appears to be a great number of people that are
having the same problem?

Needless to say I will keep a hard copy of your solution on hand in case the
problem returns.

Thanks again Vicky for your time and patience.

You're very welcome, I'm glad it worked. You'll probably return the favor
one day with a problem I'm stuck on.
