The font changes in Wizard merge fields 'more items...'

I am merging some fields into a letter from excel using the Word mail merge
wizard. I merge the address fields easily and without problem. But when I try
to merge a salutation and text into the body of the letter from the Excell
file using the 'more items.., the merge occurs but in a much larger font.
When I change the font, the letter adds another section or page in the
middle of the two page letter.
 
Toggle the field display from <<fieldname>> to {Mergefield fieldname} with
ALT+F9, format the field as you want it to appear, then add a Charformat
switch thus {Mergefield fieldname \*Charformat} then re-run your merge.
