"the file is too deep"

What does this mean? I was trying to copy from one XP
machine to another on XP home and I got this message.

Possibly that the path to the file has so many subdirectories that it
exceeds the max (string) length for a path + filename? I think the limit is
around 280 characters. Do you know of any extremely-deeply nested
directories on the machine?
