"The file 'asms' is needed..."

I have already deleted the upperfilter and lower filter keys, like the
knowledge base says. (Side note: I also deleted the upperfilter.bak and
lowerfilter.bak keys. Should I have done that? Also, CurrentControlSet001 did
not have a lowerFilter key, but only a lowerfilter.bak key.)

I am performing a repair install (Don't tell me clean install works better.
I will, eventually use a clean install, but for now I just want to be able to
boot up.). I first set up the repair install using my SP1a disk (XP Pro).
Then, I learned of slipstreaming and slipstreamed SP2 into my disk. The disk
boots up, has all the files, etc....

I still get the error message. I have tried both disks in both disk drives,
different file paths, even. Eventually I used command prompt to start up
notepad, in order to get to a file browsing dialogue. While having disks in
both drives, when double-clicking their icons, they both say... "Please
insert a disk into disk drive..."

I don't want to take it to a professional to be repaired, unfortunately. I
want to do this myself.

Help, please? Thank you in advance.

Replace your CD drive and get the hard disk drive diagnostics to check out
your hard disk drive to see if it has issues.

Other than that - if you are just trying to get files off - use an Ultimate
Boot CD of some sort and copy what you need off...
http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/
or
http://www.ubcd4win.com/

As for your question - it doesn't matter. Deleting those keys would not
HARM anything to the point where you should need to do a repair install,
etc.

Well, Thank you. I jut thought it was weird that my BIOS can access the cd
drives, but windows can't. (I booted from my slipstreamed cd even after I got
that error.) That is leading me to believe that the problem is with windows,
not the cd drive, so I was looking for a way to find out how to deal with it
in windows.

Thank you for all your answers, Stenan Stanley.
