The fax console in WinXP Pro does not work

The fax console in WinXP Pro does not work -- and gives no reason why it
failed to send a fax. Oh yeah, it states that there is no dial tone. Yet I
am listening to the dial tone as I type this message.

Is there an inexpensive or free fax machine that does work? If so, what is
it and where can I find it?

I realize that the facsimile is outmoded technology, but occasionally I need
it?

That would be a reason that it can't send a fax, and the cause may be with
the modem, not with the Fax service. Check its settings and use
HyperTerminal to test it with AT commands and to try dialing.

Nothing will work if the modem doesn't respond properly. That's where you
need to start looking.
