Hello I am being plagued by the message "The server unexpectedly closed the
connection" in FrontPage 2002 whenever I try to upload to my site.

In the hopes of resolving the problem here is the background of how the
problem developed; my apologies to all if this seems like a long winded
tale...

In December 2003 I purchased a new modem and I was never very happy with it.
On January 04/04 when I was uploading some minor directory corrections and
my system suddenly went into a continuous reboot cycle that I couldn't break
out of. In desperation I used the Windows XP upgrade disk to break it.
Then half way through the set up my house suffered a several second power
failure and bang I was dead in the water and couldn't do anything. I was
unable to boot up to XP and even my original computers system recovery disks
would not help me. The next day I purchased the full version of Windows Xp
and installed it as second operating system on my Pc. I then backed up
everything I could to a Cd in the hopes of restoring after a reformat of the
primary hard disk. Unfortutanly those files pertaining to Outlook Express,
my address book, and the newsgroup where either wiped out by the reinstall
or where corrupt and unrecoverable. A little tip here to anyone reading
this sorry tale. ALWAYS ALWAYS back up important files such as these AS
WELL AS your data files. You never know when something like this can
happen.

At any rate a couple days later reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled
all the software INCLUDING my website. I then checked my site and
discovered when the original system crash it also took out parts of my site.
Fine so I decided to reload the entire site of 300+ megs over a dial up
connection. Realizing that it would take a few hours (okay I lied about a
day and half) I let it run. The only problem was I kept getting plagued by
"Parse Errors" and "The server unexpectedly closed the connection".

About 5 days ago Comcast was offering high speed internet in my area and for
obvious reasons I jumped at it and now have high speed internet. I
immediately set about reloading my site. The only problem is the errors
persisted. I would get half way into the upload and bang "The server
unexpectedly closed the connection" message pops up. I am sure it has
something to do with but the time it takes for the message to occur was
getting progressively less and less. Now it is to the point that 5 seconds
after the upload begins the message appears.

Can anyone offer any suggestions for what's going wrong...? I have
contacted the server and they are as mystified as I am. Their only
suggestion is for me to change my ftp settings to passive.

Thanks,

Andrew S

Since you have had several failed publish events you may have a corrupt web cache file
- find and delete all *.web files in Windows Explorer
- Open your site & run a Tools recalculate hyperlinks
Also since you are timing out on the server ask your host to lengthen the timeout
- BTW are you running any firewall software?

Stefan,
Thanks for getting back with some advice...
Unfortunately after doing a search for .web files none have shown up. I
expanded the search outward to a global search of the Pc. But No luck...

I haven't tried doing a test page yet.. As far as I know there shouldn't be
a server issue..

The only firewall software I am running is Norton's and that has never
interfered with my abilities in the past. OF course that was in the pre
crash days..

I am debating about asking the server to just delete the entire site and try
uploading it as a new site...
Another idea is to buy the upgrade to FP 2004 and see if that helps.

Any thoughts???

Andrew

Sefan,
*.web files should appear as my system is set to display hidden system
files.

Norton refers to the Symantec suite of utility and security packages. In
the case I am referring to Norton Internet Security.

There has to be an answer to this problem as it's damned annoying... I am
wondering if I tried uploading the site in sections.... Perhaps one image
gallery at a time?

You need to set it to permit FP under your Personal Firewall Program Control

That may not work - it hasn't for me since I switched servers (long
story).

If it IS the firewall, try a normal http publish with the firewall
disabled - if that does NOT work, your problem isn't Norton, or at least
not the firewall. If it DOES work, you are exactly where I am at the
moment. I too have never had a problem with conflicts with Norton
Personal Firewall, not even with FP2002 until I changed hosts.

Still working on the problem but at least I have a less than
satisfactory workaround to keep my site updated.

Anyone know exactly what FrontPage needs that NPF is supposed to block?
the standard FTP and HTTP ports are enabled by default - could there be
some sort of answer back or authentication channel being used by the
host that is being blocked?

NIS blocks FP
You need to set it to permit FP under your Personal Firewall Program Control

From the NIS help on NPF program Control
Turn on Automatic Program Control: Creates a new firewall rule for low-risk programs that it recognizes the first time that they are
run. Run LiveUpdate weekly to keep your protection current.
Program Scan: Scans for Internet-enabled programs that it recognizes and lets you choose settings for each program.

Thanks, Stefan, but all that has been done, even including complete
re-installs of FP and the Norton firewall -- no difference. FP is
access-enabled, incoming and outgoing -- that was the default for the
firewall anyway. The IP for the host is in the safe zone -- no
difference.

Stefan,
David has echoed my own experiences with Norton Internet Security.. I am
going to try rebuilding my site from the ground up later tonight in the
hopes that may solve the problems. Granted it is going to take a little
while to rebuild a site that is 344 megs but as I see I have very little
alternative..

Andrew

If you totally un-install Norton, can you connect?

Honestly, I don't see how rebuilding your web site is going to solve this
issue., especially if the issue is your ability to connect to a remote
server.

Thomas,
What I am wondering is if I tried doing it in stages... IT is becoming
pretty clear to me that somewhere in the chain there is a limitation on how
much I can upload at one time. My provider says there is no limitation, and
my server says the same thing. When I set FrontPage to replace the pages I
can get about 2/3 the way through the upload before that infuriating message
appears "The server unexpectedly closed the connections". My site is 344
megs in size and perhaps by uploading it in stages, well this might resolve
the problem... I will try creating a dummy page in a separate new web and
upload it that way and if it works we have a confirmation that it is an
upload issue.

For a site of that size, you should break it into subwebs.

Also content (files) that is mainly on the site for download or photos call
via a server-side application, should be in a subweb, and can then be safely
uploaded via FTP.

Thomas,
What I am wondering is if I tried doing it in stages...

Honestly, I don't see how rebuilding your web site is going to solve this
issue., especially if the issue is your ability to connect to a remote
server.

Stefan,
David has echoed my own experiences with Norton Internet Security.. I am
going to try rebuilding my site from the ground up later tonight in the
hopes that may solve the problems. Granted it is going to take a little
while to rebuild a site that is 344 megs but as I see I have very little
alternative..

Andrew

Thanks, Stefan, but all that has been done, even including complete
re-installs of FP and the Norton firewall -- no difference. FP is
access-enabled, incoming and outgoing -- that was the default for the
firewall anyway. The IP for the host is in the safe zone -- no
difference.

From the NIS help on NPF program Control
Turn on Automatic Program Control: Creates a new firewall rule for
low-risk programs that it recognizes the first time that they are
run. Run LiveUpdate weekly to keep your protection current.
Program Scan: Scans for Internet-enabled programs that it recognizes
and lets you choose settings for each program.

Okay now you have me... Subwebs???
I have heard the phrase before but never explored it. Care to point me in
a direction that I could learn more about them? and perhaps elaborate a
little on a "via a server-side application"?

For whatever its' worth my site www.photogshangar.com is about aviation
photography and it's a collection of several hundred images divided into a
number of galleries. The average image size is about 100 to 150k and they
are displayed on each page with a thumbnail linked to the image.

For whatever it's worth I really do appreciate the endeavors on the part of
you guys at Ms in helping me get this problem resolved... I just wish I
could get my damned site going again.

Subwebs are complete and independent webs under a root or another subweb and
require that the server has the FP extensions and that you are publishing
via FP's http mode. The can be published independently of the web they are
located under. You just need to check with your host to make sure your
account allows for the creation of subwebs.

To create subwebs, just right click on a folder, then select convert to web,
do not delete the _private folder or the images folder that FP creates, even
if you don't plan to use them.

Since you site is mainly photographs, then subwebs would be excellent way to
manage your content, and may solve your current publishing problems, as you
would only need to publish the content that has changes, which could just be
the root web or an individual subweb.

The part about a server-side application would apply if you used a database
to store info about your photos, and a link to the images.

BTW: MVPs are not Microsoft Employees.

Thomas,
Okay then I will check with my server and see if they support them. I will
also engage in a little bit of research to learn more about this area as it
is an area that my knowledge to be kind is rather limited. No matter how
you cut it though that damned system crash is proving to be hell of a lot to
work to recover from, I am supposed to be out shooting not sorting out this
crap. I have already spent $300, and foregone three planned day photo trips
because of it.

In the meantime this idea of data base is intriguing another area I will
have to learn more about.... I am wondering if there isn't some service I
subscribe to that manages my site... Oh well as it's only a hobby any such
service would likely be prohibitively expensive.

For a site of that size, you should break it into subwebs.

Also content (files) that is mainly on the site for download or photos call
via a server-side application, should be in a subweb, and can then be safely
uploaded via FTP.

Thomas,
What I am wondering is if I tried doing it in stages... IT is becoming
pretty clear to me that somewhere in the chain there is a limitation on
how
much I can upload at one time. My provider says there is no limitation,
and
my server says the same thing. When I set FrontPage to replace the pages
I
can get about 2/3 the way through the upload before that infuriating
message
appears "The server unexpectedly closed the connections". My site
is
344
megs in size and perhaps by uploading it in stages, well this might
resolve
the problem... I will try creating a dummy page in a separate new web
and
upload it that way and if it works we have a confirmation that it is an
upload issue.

Andrew

If you totally un-install Norton, can you connect?

Honestly, I don't see how rebuilding your web site is going to solve
this
issue., especially if the issue is your ability to connect to a remote
server.

Thanks, Stefan, but all that has been done, even including complete
re-installs of FP and the Norton firewall -- no difference. FP is
access-enabled, incoming and outgoing -- that was the default for
the
firewall anyway. The IP for the host is in the safe zone -- no
difference.

Okay then Thomas you have my interest...
Currently my process after a photo adventure or sorting of images is to edit
them first in Adobe, and then copyright and scale them down with MS Picture
It! 2.0 (old version I know but I like it and it does a nice job). Then
access FP 2002 insert the image into the appropriate gallery, and then auto
thumbnail the images. Sometimes it may require a new gallery, such as one
that I was hoping to have up and running by now Titled "Air Show Armor".
Other times I will just add to a collection of images in an existing gallery
such as "P51 Cripes Almighty" or "Pan AM Clipper Udvar-Hazy Center". Then I
simply thumbnail the image, save to the appropriate directory and upload the
changed pages.

I am in at composing an E-mail asking their thoughts about sub-webs and I
will ask them data base support...

Short term though it is becoming pretty obvious I will have to ask them to
clean out my site and start off fresh with a new one (Oh joy)..

firewall anyway. The IP for the host is in the safe
zone --
no
difference.

From the NIS help on NPF program Control
Turn on Automatic Program Control: Creates a new
firewall
rule
for
low-risk programs that it recognizes the first time that they
are
run. Run LiveUpdate weekly to keep your protection current.
Program Scan: Scans for Internet-enabled programs that it
recognizes
and lets you choose settings for each program.

| That may not work - it hasn't for me since I switched
servers
(long
| story).
|
| If it IS the firewall, try a normal http publish with the
firewall
| disabled - if that does NOT work, your problem isn't Norton,
or
at
least
| not the firewall. If it DOES work, you are exactly
where
I
am
at
the
| moment. I too have never had a problem with conflicts with
Norton
| Personal Firewall, not even with FP2002 until I changed
hosts.
|
| Still working on the problem but at least I have a
less
than
| satisfactory workaround to keep my site updated.
|
| Anyone know exactly what FrontPage needs that NPF is
supposed
to
block?
| the standard FTP and HTTP ports are enabled by default -
could
there
be
| some sort of answer back or authentication channel being
used
by
the
| host that is being blocked?
