Ah ! The big switch-on IS today - at 08.31A.M. and I'm still here composing this. :thumb: I thought that there was something about 10-9-8.

But don't get too complacent cos this is just to check that particles can be sent all the way round the machine. The main experiment of colliding the particles will not happen for another 2-3 weeks.

So, you've still got time to do all those things that you mean to do before the end.:D

And just what would you do if you only had a couple of weeks to go?

They aim to produce a micro blackhole, whilst in space (a near vacume) these evaporate almost immediatly due to evaporation being higher than mass absorbtion.
However, all they have is theories on the control of a blackhole in a relative vacume (vacume made in a non-vacume enviroment). If it absorbs quicker than it evaporates thats gonna be the end.
We'd only know about it via the effects of time dilation (the big red glow that would radiate from Switzalend) and as it grew spaghettification would exponate. To others time would seem to slow down for us however we'd observe no difference untill passing the event horizon and being pulled into a billion billion billion etc pieces.

I imagine that would be a painfull way to die :p

Just heard on the radio that Ladbrokes are offering 50,000-1 that the CERN experiment will lead to the destruction of the world.

And that someone has put £20 on, which, if it happens, will get him a cool million.

Was very suprised today to see how many people were actually very scared :p , scaremongering is a very dangerous game ..we have had a post from someone who sounded very scared  .The press don`t help but hey it sells a rag , 8.30 am went without the cataclysmic bang forecast by some and october 18/21 will undoubtably be similar hopefully . Lets hope that through all this , some good will come from it .We humans love to explore the unexplored and thats what drives us forward in technology and intellect but really ...for $4b could we have spent it wiser ??

THe press in this country don't help with anything, and all to often blow everything completely out of proportion, ometimes not even getting facts right..They are also guilty of over hyping things..But there again I have noticed that the vast majority of people that read said rags enjoy other people misery...Come 18/21 it will be the same or worse...

This story really peed me off, do people really think that scientists would go out of their way to destroy the earth?

Not to upset you murdoch or anyone else but scientists went out of their way to destroy people in Hiroshima

The problem is building things like this we are masters of our own destiny.

Look what we have done to the planet with chemicals and emmisions, what else do your think we have in store in the near future if we survive our own stupidity :(
