"The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom1." ?

Starting yesterday, I've been getting many iterations of the
system seeming to freeze up, only to come back after 15-20
seconds.

Process Explorer seems to be telling me that "Interrupts" are
going out of sight during these periods - as in 25+ percent of
CPU.

Looking at Event Viewer for System, I see many, many, *many* of
"The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom1." and
almost as many "The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort3, did not respond
within the timeout period."

Sounds like something's about to bite the big one, but is it on
the mobo itself or is it in one of the DVD drives (both of which
are plugged in to SATA ports on the mobo).

Can anybody tell from the info presented?

Nope. Have you verified that the SATA cables are properly seated a both ends ?

How many SATA ports are used and how many SATA ports are free on this system ?

Quick catch!

I was just about to post that I found a Windows Help and Support
Center article that says "This problem is typically caused by a
failing cable that connects the drive to the computer."

My guess, not having cracked the case yet, is 3 used and 3 free.
