"the backup file contains unrecognized data"

I use the microsoft XP backup program, sending its daily files to a locally
mounted network disk drive. The backup files are refreshed every day. BUT
I cannot restore any file from the backup archives--what's wrong?

There is no catalog shown for the backup files in my "manage" tab--is this
the problem? If so, how can I change my command to get the catalog files to
happen? The daily schedule command is:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Documents and Settings\David
Luce\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
NT\NTBackup\data\Monday Night.bks" /n "Monday Incremental.bkf created
2/25/2006 at 11:47 AM" /d "Set created 2/25/2006 at 11:47 AM" /v:yes /r:no
/rs:no /hc:blush:ff /m incremental /j "Monday Night" /l:s /f "E:\Backup
BeechTree6\Incremental\Monday Incremental.bkf"

I have found that sometimes the backup succeeds, and sometimes it fails.

I have had two successes; the first was accidental, the second a test. The
Wednesday 11PM backup ran. I was working late, and the backup scheduler
executed OK. The second time, I set up a one-time scheduled test at 1PM ,
and it ran as well.

The successful backup scheduling command is the same as the failed one,
except for the names of the files involved.
When the backup succeeds, I get a catalog file in the Restore and Manage
Media tab, I see an entry in the Reports" menu item, and when I click on the
line, I get a 30-line summary backup log file, named backup##.log. When the
backup fails, I get no catalog, no summary file, and I only get a
single-line entry in the Reports item, containing the Job Name.

So the question is, what component of Windows external to the Backup
scheduler, is needed to make it work? Could it have something to do with
the E: drive? COuld the E: drive become unmoted when I am idle for a while,
and not get remounted in time to respond to the backup command? Is there a
system event log which does or could record these errors?
