Thanks to Gary VanderMolen for his solution - but.....

I was able to get rid of the unwanted deleted files thanks to Gary
VanderMolen, so a big thanks. But now the messages I need to keep in my
inbox only appear below under recovered messages - and every time I shut down
Windows Mail, they all come up again highlighted as unread. Is there a way I
can re-incorporate them in chronological order to my main inbox, since the
only inbox mails in that folder are the ones as of May 10 for some reason.

Thanks for your solutions. Not being very computer-savvy, I really
appreciate the help.

Have you tried dragging and dropping the recovered messages into
the inbox? If that works, you can delete the recovered messages folder
after moving everything out of it.

OH brother - now I have real problems. Before I received your reply, I
thought about doing a system restore - but it wasn't successful and in the
meantime, now I lost all my inbox prior to May 10. OH MY LORD!!! I need
those files. Is there a chance I can find them somewhere? By doing the
system restore, I rebooted the computer. HELP!

I've had no experience with Vista's system restore, but I didn't
think it was supposed to affect data (like emails).
Perhaps you can use Windows Explorer to look around for the
missing emails. IF they exist, they would be somewhere in:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders
