tft minitor

please excuse if this is the wrong newsgroup but I cannot find an
appropriate one.
I want to replace my 15" tft monitor with a 19" tft and am considering a
benQ as recommended by Computeractive. My reason for changing is mainly
that my present screen is not bright enough (I do know how to adjust it
etc).
Most tft monitors have a brightness of 250 but I see the Sony has a figure
of 450, it of course is very much more expensive. My budget is around the
£200 to £250 mark.
Can anyone tell me, how to find out the brightness of my present monitor ( a
Fujitsu Siemens CTM5010) and secondly if there really is a great difference
between the figure of 250 and 450?
Thank you.

what video card do you have? Higher end cards have brightness controls
within the driver. If these are out of wack then your monitor won't seem to
have enough brightness control or if you use a preset within the monitor.

Thank you for the reply; my card is the NVIDIA GeForce FX5200, I have
previously set the Brightness, Contrast, Gamma and other settings to
different levels but they do not cure the problem.
I should say that my monitor works perfectly for all normal purposes, it is
when we are viewing DVD movies that we are finding that some sequences are
too dark to be seen other than close to the screen.
I am hoping that a new tft monitor with larger screen area will cure that
but do concern myself about the different brightness levels.

Have you set the monitor brightness? Did you get a manual? There is
usually a OSD button to bring up control menu on screen.
Mike.

Mike, I have done all that, as I say, using it normally there is no problem,
just with DVDs. Even playing VHS tapes and using WinTv all is OK.
I shall buy another but just want to be sure it will be bright enough.
