New 22" TFT monitors?

S

srt

Hi,
My present iiyama 450 pro crt is playing up after six years and I am
interested in the latest crop of TFT screens. Any views on best rated for
gaming (low response).
I see a Samsung SM226BW has good reports but have also noted that Dell
Ultrasharp 2208WFP is thought good too. Typically confused with all the
reviews but is anything new around the corner? Price is not too much of an
issue tia.

Response rate hasn't been much of an issue in TFTs for quite some time now.
Just about any current (name brand) LCD monitor will work fine for gaming.
What you need to be aware of is aspect ratio. Wide-screen monitors are more
popular, but they also offer less viewable area. That is, a 22" widescreen
(16:9) is comparable to a ~19" standard 4:3 aspect ratio monitor, in terms
of viewable size.

So if price isn't an issue, just decide how large you want your monitor,
then go UP a couple of sizes if you decide you want a widescreen version.
That is, if you want a 22" monitor, a 26" or larger widescreen would be a
good choice, if you MUST have widescreen.

If you just want great quality without having to wade through a bazillion
reviews and user reports, think NEC. -Dave

Both should be on the short list of anyone considering a 22" TFT. In
North America Samsung uses one of three different LCD panels which some
have commented about.

The somewhat less expensive HannsG 223DPB may be worth looking at as well.

I've had no problems with the Samsung 228BW for gaming on the PC
and Xbox as well as watching films with fast -moving scenes etc. It's a
good all-round monitor imo.

While the Samsung B series are good, their T series is much better (though
pricier) in viewing angle, contrast, and response. I just got a 244T for my new
system; I have a Samsung 193P on my other one.

Samsung LCDs are much better than Dell LCDs.

You might want to rethink your choice of going to a 22" LCD monitor.
Generally 22" LCD monitors only use 6 bit color panels. 24" LCD's generally
use full 8 bit color panels. Translates to better color appearance.

Just got a Samsung 245BW. I'm lovin' it. So here's a vote for Samsung,
although I'll grant that I've never had any Dell anything.

I've got two of those right now, one mounted above the other.

Fantastic monitors, although the viewing angle (vertically) isn't quite
so fantastic, so with two of them I need to be careful to keep the upper
one tilted just right.

The only thing I miss is an SVIDEO input (but I knew that before I
bought the monitor, so I can't really complain)

Wall Of Video! :)

That's the idea, although I actually have a 17" widescreen over to the
right-hand side that I use for video...

Try as I might, I just don't like video playing on my "work" monitors, I
find it interferes too much with my available screen space.

Well I appreciate that colours can be better but I would be jumping from a
19" CRT to 22"
which is enough for me at the moment (would the colour difference be that
noticeable?).
I went through some serious "ear-ache" from the other half when I bought a
42" Plasma TV last year to replace our old 32" Cathode!! :)
It is kind of big and some folks suggested the 50" was better too :)
Thanks for your inputs all.

That would depend heavily on the CRT you have now and which TFT you
choose. Colors on my old CRT (Viewsonic 21" G810) were very slightly
better than colors on my TFT (4:3 NEC 19" 90GX2), but the TFT is much
sharper. Overall, the TFT has been a solid improvement and I've never
regretted the switch even though I did lose a little screen area
(about 19.75" viewable on the CRT as opposed to 19").

A 22" widescreen TFT would be a good choice for you if you're
satisfied with the screen height you have now. Applying the standard
4:3/16:9 multiplier of 1.22 to the approximate 18" viewing area on
your 19" CRT, a 22" widescreen TFT display would be about the same
height.
