Terminal Services - Licensing?

Hiya,

This should perhaps be in the Terminal Services section,
but I figured it was more a licensing question than a
technical one...

If I want to run Terminal Services on Windows 2000 in
Application Mode (as opposed to Administrator Mode) do I
need licences for my Win 2000 Pro clients?

Thanks,
Dave

A Windows 2000 Terminal Services CAL or a license for
Windows 2000 Professional is required to run Windows-based
desktop and applications from a Windows 2000 server,
regardless of the protocol or software used to interact
with applications running on the server.

A Windows 2000 Server Client Access License (CAL) or
BackOffice® 2000 CAL is required to access the Windows
2000 server.

Yes you do. You will have a 90-day window in which it "doesn't" need one
but on the 91st day accounts will start failing with a 1004 or 1010 event
ID. The service needs to be installed and activated but so long as your
clients are 2KPro or better (XP Home doesn't count) they have a built in
license and you should not have any connection issues with them. If you
have any downlevel clients you will need to purchase TSCALs for them.

Craig, you reply might be a little confusing. I think we need to
clarify that there are 2 components to TS licensing, similar to
licensing for NTx server services. The server itself needs to be
licensed (the activation), but you don't need TS CAL's for W2K or higher
clients.

Therefore, in order to properly license a W2K server running TS in
application server mode w/ on W2K TS clients, you need:

1) Appropriate license for W2KS (or AS, DC, etc.)
2) Configuration and activation of at least one TS licensing server in
your domain. Could be on this machine itself, or another W2KS
3) Any W2K CAL's for clients that will open file or printer shares on
this server
