Terminal Server/Citrix Metaframe spooler crash

Andrew Mullan

Problem 1: (occurring most days)
When printing from the Citrix client the job will stop, and can't even be
canceled or deleted. When this happens starting and stopping the spooler
server will usually fix it.

Problem 2 (occurring every few days - once per week)
Sometimes the spooler service completely stops, and even after manually
restarting the service, the service stops after a few seconds. When this
happens there are normally 2 files in the following location that need to be
manually deleted before the service can be restarted.
C:\WINNT\system32\spool\PRINTERS
The files are named 000044.SHD and 00044.SPL (the file number increases each
time)

These are the errors in the System Event log.

EVENT ID: 26

This is due to an invalid printer driver on your Citrix
server or trying to be installed on the server. One thing
you can do is use the Citrix SP3 universal printer drivers
for everything. Or, you can figure out the problem driver
then map the driver to another printer.

If that doesn't work, there is a product called Rippletech
Logcaster that has a service watcher that will restart the
spooler if it detects the spooler stopping.

Hope this helps!

Citrix loads a port monitor, called the Client Printer Port, it can be
found in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\Client
Printer Port
I have seen several cases where this port monitor causes the print spooler
to crash. You need it for your ICA clients to be able to print properly,
but there is a hotfix for it:
