Hi,

We are running a windows 2000 server with the Terminal
server running in application mode. The reason the
terminal services is running in application mode is that
we have a number of helpdesk staff that need access to the
server to do account unlocks for domain accounts.

The question is do we need to licence the Terminal server,
so far I have got different answers on the subject.

Can anyone help?

Yes, if the TS runs in Application server mode, you must at least install and activate a TS Licensing Server. If the TS is part of an AD domain, the LS must run on a Domain Controller.

If you need to buy and install TS CALs depends on the type of clients. If your helpdesk staff runs W2K Pro or XP Pro on their local desktops, then you don't have to buy any TS CALs. These clients get a free TS CAL from the LS, as soon as it is activated.
For all other clients you must buy and install a TS CAL.
