temporary file needed/initialization/not found

Quite often, now, I cannot intall some programs and this is the pop-up
comment that occurs;

16 bit Windows Subsystem

D:\DOCUME~1\BRUCEM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\. A temporary file needed for
initialization could not be created or could not be written to. Make sure
that the
directory path exists, and disk space is available. Choose 'Close' to
terminate the
application.

How in the word do I fix this problem? Please help!
Thanks

There is no fix. I've spent countless hours on the issue. Well meaning
people will give you tons of suggestions, all of which will fail because
noone knows the cause of this error message. We're just going to have to
wait until someone/somewhere with some real knowledge of these things finds
the cause and hopefully the cure. Have you run AOL's computer check utility
at all? Do you have AOL loaded on your machine? Maybe we can compare notes
on programs we have and see what we have in common that might contribute to
this 16-bit malady.

Thanks
Paul

Thanks Bruce,
Don't bother with the download from VisualTour, all it'll do is put three
files into the System 32 folder that are already there, only with .bak
extensions. Designed for another, much easier issue.....won't hurt anything
though if you already downloaded them. That's good that you don't have any
AOL stuff on your computer, it eliminates that possibility. When did you
install Service Pack 2? Recently? Did you uninstall Norton recently in
favor of another virus program? I did both things shortly before my issue
cropped up.

Two customers of mine have encountered the exact same problem when trying to
load a program from a piece of software we sell and I'm trying to find a
solution for them. I share your frustration Paul and Bruce! Let me know if
there's any news on this one.

Cheers,

Matt
