Templates in WAN environment

We have several word templates created in San Jose that are emailed to other
offices around the country. When users open them the document is loaded San
Jose because it looks for the .dot template file there, and it takes forever
to open. We know how to break the template link after the file is opened,
but can it be broken before the file is opened? Or is there simply a better
way to deal with central templates in a WAN environment?

Hi T.,

I'm not sure I'm clear on your scenario. If you email the *template* to the other Offices how is it then tied to San Jose if it's
being stored locally [server or computer] (i.e. it's not recommended to open any Word file directly from email) if it's stored in a
locally pointing Workgroup template location?

You didn't mention the version of Word but 2003 and 2007 have an Option setting for creating a local copy of the document before
opening if it's on a network share (Word 2007's should be automatically doing that).
