Template Auto-changing?

I have a custom template that I am using to apply to documents.

When I open the template and originally create the new document,
everything works fine.

However, as soon as I choose to "Save" the file, Word removes the
custom template and reverts to normal.dot, instantly closing all the
custom toolbars, etc.

The document will retain the custom template when using "Save As..."
and overwriting the existing file. Unfortunately, I need to distribute
this to other users, so this needs to be fixed so the template remains
constantly regardless of the save method.

Any insight would be wonderful, thanks!

You are not using the template correctly. Save the template as a template,
which will make it available for new documents. Create new documents from
the template. The users should have no need to ever *open* the template.
