temp files that won't go away

Recently, all of my open word documents have been
generating temp files that show up in my folder(not in a
temp file). Unfortunately, they keep adding up and won't
go away unless I shut down word completely. I can't
access a document without scrolling thru all the temp
files first. What's up with that?

Word always creates a temp file for each open document. Normally these get
deleted when you close the document, unless Word terminates abnormally.

You shouldn't see them when you're opening a document from within Word,
unless you've got the 'Files of Type' selection set to 'All Files' on the
File > Open dialog.
