Problem deleting temp files

R

Ron Barker

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help. I have tried everything to remove temp files
but I have been unable to do so. For the avoidance of any doubt. I have
followed the instruction on
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm. I have no problem
finding the temp files. They just will not delete. Either I get the message
cannot delete source file. Or the screen freezes and then I get the message
not responding. I have tried opening the source file by right clicking the
temp file which takes me to all documents. The temp files are there but
still will not delete. For some, at least of the temp files I think that I
may have caused the problem by not closing the file properly. This has
occurred when I open a word file use it for a few minutes as a sort of note
pad then after deleting the text closed the document without saving, thinking
that it will be deleted because nothing has been saved. Big mistake, but now
I am left with a lot of temp files that will not delete.

Cheers

Reboot the PC, then without starting Word, delete the temporary files.
Depending on what background programs you have running, you may not be able
to delete all the files in the user temp folder associated with Windows. The
orphan lock files in the template and document directories should all be
deletable.

Hi Graham

Thanks for that. The temp folder is empty, I think. I find that I have over
a 1000 files when I do a search. some of the files are obviously word docs.
When I right click on one of these files and open the folder containing the
file 'My Documents' opens and there are a large number of temp word docs,
they are I suppose more like scrap docs as opposed to temp docs. They will
not delete. I have activated show all hidden files but if I open my
documents by the normal process these files do not appear.

PS I clicked to be alerted if there was an answer to my post but I was not
alerted!

cheers

If you have Word as your Outlook editor, you will need Outlook closed also
before you can delete Word's temporary files.
The only files relevant to this reply are those with a filename construction
identified in the web page to which I referred you.

These files will be in the Word template/startup and documents folders.

If you have read/write access to the files in question and you still cannot
delete them, there would appear to be something more problematical with your
disc filing system. You may be able to delete them from a DOS window (if you
know how to use DOS). I hesitate to recommend anything further at this
distance.

I believe you only get an alert if the person responding uses the forum.
Most of us who respond do so through Usenet http://www.gmayor.com/MSNews.htm
