Tell me about _vti folders

I use FrontPage 2002. Looking at the tree structure of my web in Windows
Explorer, I've noticed _vti folders. Two such folders in the main tree are
_vti_cnf and _vti_pvt. Other than the folder _vti_cnf, every other folder in
the tree structure (_borders, _derived, _overlay, _themes, _vti_pvt, _images,
_index_files) has a _vti_cnf sub-folder. The _vti_cnf subfolder seems to
contain all the same files as its parent folder. Is this duplication of
files necessary? When publishing the web, is this eating up valuable space
on my ISP server? What would happen if I were to delete all the _vti_cnf
subfolders? Does this have anything to do with the difference in publishing
via http: vs ftp:?

.
The _vti folders are a necessary part of the FrontPage
Server Extension. They take little space on your server.

Read this article on the subject:

VTI stands for Vermeer Technologies, Inc., the original
developers of FrontPage.

don't touch those folders - they are associated with Frontpage extensions and so
on. they *should* be hidden system files on your system

In Windows Explorer, don't hidden systems files show up as a transparent
icon? My _vti folders all appear as normal icons. I am curious about these
folders because FrontPage indiates that my website is just over 5 MB in size,
yet when I publish to my ISP server, the server indicates I have surpassed
its 10MB limit. So it seems like some duplication is going on.

They are hidden in FrontPage, but not Windows Explorer.

As for the space issue, recalculate hyperlinks and then publish.

The _vti folders are never published, the FP extensions on the server create and maintain it own
copy. Check with your host to see if they are storing server log files for your site within your web
space or tracking the space used as part of your web space allotment.

The are only hidden from the FP Client application.
