Here's one that's new to me. She claims that when the phone rings, it powers
on her computer. I just installed a new copy of XP Home on it a few days
ago. She claims that a person where she works says that this can happen and
you have to disable something. I have never heard of it.

Can this happen?

In the BIOS (hardware) configuration look for "Wake on" settings in the
power management section. "Wake on ring" is probably one of them and needs
to be disabled.

Hi Joe

Yes it can.

In the BIOS settings (Award BIOS) the wake on LAN and Wake on Modem settings
are enabled by default. This means that either a phone call or network
traffic detected on a network card can power up the PC. In the Award BIOS
hitting the delete key during startup (before the OS begins to load) will
take you to a screen that will allow you to configure the BIOS. You want to
go to the Power management section and disable the wake on modem setting.
While you are in there I would suggest that you disable all BIOS power
management as WinXP does a good job of this itself and is easier to get to.
I have had several bad experiences when both the BIOS and the OS tried to
control power management. If your PC has something other than Award BIOS
then usually the F2 key on boot up will open an interface to the system
BIOS. If neither of these keys gets you into the BIOS setup utility then
you will need to contact your system vendor.

Best regards
GordL
