For some reason my PC cannot optain a valid IP address from my switch (keep
getting the 169.x.x.x address) even tho' other PC's are able to. If I
assign a static IP with all the correct IP settings I see packets going out
but nothing coming back. I have:

uninstalled and re-installed the NIC
switched cables
changed ports on the switch
added a second NIC
uninstalled and re-installed TCP protocol
re-run SP2
re-run the XP installation
and cursed a blue streak but NO JOY!!!

Anyone have any thoughts???
TIA,
LenP

Hi
To obtain an IP from an external device it need a DHCP server. A regular Switch does not
have a DHCP server.
If you have a Cable/DSL Router with the DHCP On and it does not work, may be this can

Jack (MVP-Networking).

Will give that a try. Yes you are correct the switch is an SMC broadband
router, w/ four ethernet ports, running DHCP. I'm leaning toward the
registry being fried.

Thanks,

Len,

How do you connect to the Internet? Make and model of network equipment might
be very useful here.

If you actually have a switch, you shouldn't expect to get an IP address from
it. You should be getting an IP address from your ISP, or from a NAT router
(which you should be using).

Provide some details about your Internet service:

Here is the actual message I get when I choose the 'Repair" option after
right-clicking on the systray icon for the network connection...

"Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action
cannot be completed:

Renewing your Ip address

For assistance contact the person who manages your network."

last night I tried...
"netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt"

tonight I will try Doug's suggestion...
"netsh winsock reset catalog"
and see what happens.

Thanks to all for the suggestions!

"hopefully getting closer to a solution"

BTW, can anyone think of why this may not be service related? Cuold one of
the services relating to TCP/DHCP be corrupt?

You know Chuck I believe you are correct since when I key an "ipconfig"
command, I get garbage listed as the IP address. Also, when I try to ping I
get the PC 'beep', which I have never seen before.

Many thanks to all that replied, I have my connectivity back!

The one remaining item, when I issue 'ipconfig' from a command prompt, it is
still reporting strangely, i.e. instead of

IP Address............192.168.2.100
Subnet Mask.........255.255.255.0
Default Gateway....192.168.2.1

I get:

IP Address...... 192.168.2.100
Subnet Mask....255.255.255.0
IP Address.......? YES, A QUESTION MARK

Any thoughts???

TIA, Len

Len,

Post "ipconfig /all" in its entirety, for the problem computer and for one other
computer.

Also, what was your problem? What you learned might help others.

Well, it seems now that the whole system is pooched, not just the IP stack.

After running 'netsh' with a number if variations in the parameters as well
as 'winsockXPfix', I was able to get back on the 'net and indeed download
the latest couple of Security Patches from MS.

Next time I got on my system, nothing would run. I'd launch IE and I'd get
an hourglass that would spin, but no joy, no messages either.

So I thought I'd re-install XP as an update. Same symptoms, the setup would
start and I'd let it sit for an hour but it would never get to doing
anything.

Anyone have a sledgehammer, AKA fine-adjustment tool???
