TCP/IP settings keep dropping, corruption?

I have an XP Pro PC on a LAN. Every now-and-then, I'll
restart the machine and it will loose its IP address, and
assign one to itself. I loose all connections to the LAN.
I then have to system restore, as the Microsoft knowledge
base tells you too (articale 318584). Then, a few days
later, it does it again.

Apparently this is curruption to the registry, but I dont
know why it keeps happening (and strangly enough, on a
Sunday!). Any ideas?

Ritchie,

Is your computer configured to obtain its IP address automatically? If
so, it sounds like it is falling back into autoconfiguration mode, perhaps
because your DHCP server was temporarily unavailable. You should be able to
see what is going on by typing "ipconfig" at a command prompt. If all is
well, you will see a sensible IP address, subnet mask, and Gateway. If not,
you may well see an "autoconfiguration IP address" and possibly a blank
gateway. Since the autoconfiguration IP address almost certainly has the
wrong subnet, and without a gateway, you would be unable to communicate with
other computers. To try to resolve this, type "ipconfig /renew". If all is
well, it will come back pretty quickly with a new IP address; if not it
could sit there for half a minute or so before saying your DHCP server is
unavailable.

Incidentally, is this a corporate LAN with proper DHCP server or a home LAN
using Internet Connection Sharing? In the latter case, the ICS host acts as
the DHCP server and must be turned on for the process to work. DHCP
addresses come with a predefined time limit of a day or so: type "ipconfig
/all" to see the 'lease' details at the bottom of the output.

Hope this helps

Hi Jon,

I have tried the various resolves you have given already -
it is a corperate LAN with a DCHP server. When this
problem occurs, I try to renew the IP address but it wont
speak to the network. All I can do is a system restore
but the problem is persisting now on every reboot.

None of the other machines have this problem - I followed
Microsofts knowledge base and tried to re-install TCP/IP
but the uninstall option "greys out" and wont allow me to
do it.

I wonder if there is a registry issue?
