"TCP/IP CP reported error 2", no LMHOSTS option, no available rest

Wierd one, folks! This weekend I started up my computer which was working
just fine Friday and found that I cannot connect using Dial-Up Networking
(Message is above plus "The system cannot find the file specified" and shows
up after dialing and connecting). I figured - oh, well - let's check out
settings - went to configure my connection and found that the "LMHOSTS"
option is grayed out - can't be selected. So, I said "things are hosed up
pretty bad - maybe I should restore from a couple of days ago" and started up
the restore wizard only to be greated by a message stating that there are no
available restore points.

Now - here's the only major thing I changed recently: I installed a test
copy of Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition in dual-boot mode, so I could
take a look at the options available - and installed the release candidate of
Service Pack 1 for it. After that - everything was working fine for several
days, though...

I'm afraid it looks like I'm stuck with a "System Repair" at this point.
Any other ideas?

Jeez - nobody, eh? I did a complete system restore, reloaded XP/SP2 and
still have the same problem, except my restore points are back.

The computer dials the modem, connects and then gives the identical message
- "TCP/IP CP reported error 2 - file not found".

Any ideas, folks? There is no 'repair' option for dial-up networking, and I
already deleted the entry and set it up again just in case something was
wrong or my password had been mucked up somehow...

Mike,

Did you do a System Repair, or a System Restore? I think there's a difference.

IIWY, I'd try a Winsock repair, then a TCP/IP reset.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259

With XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the
command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

And if your problem is with dialup not working, maybe this will help:
Dial-up Modem or PPPoE Option in New Connection Wizard Is Unavailable

I did a full system repair - forgot to note that no system restore points
were available (??)... Repaired from the original CD/ROM and re-installed
SP2 as well, still get that error. I'll try some (several?) of the tricks
you mention, thanks, much!

Mike,

With many computer problems, multiple problems working together make a mess that
you can only resolve by multiple diagnostic and repair procedures. What you've
done so far is a start. If the procedures that I provided earlier don't fix
things completely, let us know, and we'll investigate further, together.

Patience and persistence are required in many cases like this.

Well - I just downloaded all the "Qxxx" (knowledgebase) articles so I could
work offline (can't have this laptop connected at the same time), and grabbed
the LSP fix jobbie and the Winsock XP fix tool as well.

Hopefully, luck is with me today - sorry to have strung this out so long,
but Wednesday was the RatMan's 50th birthday, so I had 'other things' to
do... (like play with my wife of 30 years, eat a whole lot more than I
needed to, etc, etc!) };^)

Thanks, again - if you don't hear back from me - it's not because I don't
appreciate the help - but - getting ready for Christmas has been complicated
by the fact that the wife fell and broke 4 ribs and cracked 2 more last week,
so - I'm having to shop for everything (people just look at you funny when
you ask for 'Size 8 womens underwear' and 'Control top Support panty hose' -
can't understand it!)...

Thanks!

Enjoy the season, Mike. Thanks for the status update.

Yep - looks like I get to try the "$35" option: none of these worked. I
still get the identical message after trying all of them. Jeez - maybe I'll
get lucky and they won't charge me - yeah, right!?! You never know - I was a
beta tester for XP, SP1 & SP2 - maybe they'll give me a break...

You have a fun, happy and above all SAFE holiday season as well!
