Taskbar

My taskbar has disappeared. It only shows the time in the right lower
corner. I need to get it back working. At some point, I may have
accidentally changed the registry but I have no idea what I changed to
make it disappear.

BTW, the QuickLaunch is still available, Start button, etc. It is
just the taskbar in the right lower corner that is no longer available
(other than the clock).

Help please.

Thanks,
Linda

That's the Notification area, though it's also called the Tray area by
some applications.

Try these Kelly tweaks. Instructions for using the applications are at
the top of the page:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Line 164. Restore Taskbar to Default Functionality
Line 298. Taskbar Repair Tool Plus!

There are other tweaks on that page, but one of these should work.

I am not yelling.

THANK YOU!

It has been frustrating for that to not be available. I use the
HotSync for the Palm. To change some settings, you have to right
click on the icon in the notification area. I could not change these
settings withouth being able to see the icon.

Glad it helped.

Hello,

I don't know if you're still monitoring this post but I'm having the same
problem. I've tried both of you recommended solutions as well as reinstalling
Windows XP Pro as an upgrade. I also download a Startup Optimizer from CNET.
com. Nothing has worked. Any other ideas?
Thanks,

Hondo

What parts are the same? Did you recently edit the registry? Do you
still have the time in the lower right? Is the Notification area shown?
Is the Taskbar there showing currently running tasks?

If no Taskbar, try these tests:

- Point at all four sides of the screen, do you get a resize pointer?

- Right-click the four extreme sides of the screen, does the context
menu include "Lock the Taskbar"?

- Press Ctrl/Alt-Delete. Under the Processes tab, is Explorer.exe running?

Ia Hi Elmo,
Thanks for getting back to me. In answer to your questions:
1. I had run the Tweak on line 294 (Hide or Show Notification Area Icons)
with the intent of getting them to "show" but all that did was hide
everything. So then looked on the Tweak pages and found a fix that was
supposed to allow me to edit those
two lines out of the Registry but nothing happened. I also tried the Tweak
on line 99 (Restore the Task Bar to Default Settings) but that didn't work
either. Then I got Startup Optimizer from CNET.com and tried running that to
no avail.
2. Right now all I have on the lower right hand corner is the time. There is
no notification area at all and even starting a program from the Start Menu
doesn't bring anything up although I can tell they're running.
3. I'm not sure what screen you're referring to when you say point to all 4
sides. I do have "Lock the Toolbar" as part of the toolbar on the bottom but
I didn't see anything change anywhere in terms of a resize pointer.
4. I checked Task Manager and explorer.exe is running.
Next? Thanks for the help!

Update as of 0900 MDT, 5 Dec 2007: Just got off a call with Microsoft Support
and they at least got me back to where I started. They ran Tweak 134 (Hide
All Notification Icons_Undo) so now I at least have a Notification Area
again. Most of the
icons loaded but I still have some that I have to start manually which is
what I was trying to fix. They were all working a week ago so I don't know
why they would have stopped. If I look in MSCONFIG and check Startup, they're
all checked so I can't figure out what to do to get them to load. Ideas?

This is from a post by Ramesh Srinivasan that I saved.

See if disabling the SSDP Discovery Service and Universal Plug and Play
Device Host service help. For more information, check the following

Be careful what you ask for, you may get it! :) Wow, there's a lot of
different steps on the winhlp.com site. I'll try some of them and let you
know what, if anything, works for me .
Thanks!
