Somehow I recieved a botton in my taskbar called
Startportal. When clicked it starts internet explorer with
a start page I never asked for or had installed.I've
managed to restore my startpage "about blank", but the
button in the taskbar still won't budge. Can anyone give me
some advice as to how can I rid my pc of this intruder?

Hi Buttons - In addition to AdAware and SpyBot S&D that Phil recommended:

Download HijackThis, free, here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip

Do a scan, find the 09 Extra Button entry that corresponds to your
"parasite" and check it, then click on "Fix checked".

Hey Jim,
believe it or not,I downloaded Hijackthis, did the
scan, checked "Startportal",did the fix and all went
well. The check was gone but the button's still in my
taskbar. When I start IE it goes directly to "about blank"
wich is essentially what I was going for but like I
said, the button's still there.Oh well you know the old
saying" If at first.....
Thanks anyhow...(maybe all I need is some typex...naahh!)

Hi Bill - Well, you can try this courtesy of MVP Remesh:

"To remove the malware Toolbars: Use ToolbarCop:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/utils/ToolbarCop.exe

ToolbarCop removes the Toolbars, Toolbar buttons and unwanted
menu-extensions from Internet Explorer. It does not remove the spyware from
the system entirely. It is advisable to run Ad-Aware scan
(www.lavasoftusa.com), if the toolbar entries are not removed.

In my toolbar selection list I have unwanted items such
as adult toolbar and a xxxbar. This is the same place
you can pick for standard buttons, address bar and
links. How can I have these deleted? All they seem to
let me do is check and uncheck these items. They were
inadvertently downloaded by my kids and I would like to
remove them. Any help would be appreciated.

well gang I've tried everything in the book, mail, internet
and all else just short of shooting my pc(I doubt that
would get rid of the darned button). So I decided to try my
last hope and do a restore(yay!XP) and that did the trick
for now.Of course I'll never be sure if it's totally out
of my system but at least it gone from my vieuw wich takes
me halfway to homeplate.I guess the people who made this
menace don't really care about what intrnet users think
about this form of privacy abuse.I'll tell you one
thing, they better stay out of reach because alot of us are
getting fed up with it.
