I think you forgot a few things. When the command prompt comes up you
have to change to the %SystemRoot% folder or in other word the system32
folder, you have to type this at the command prompt:

cd C:\winnt\system32

That's assuming that your os is on drive C. Then you have to rename
Shdocvw.dll to Shdocvw.old. I assume it's just a typo the way you wrote
it but it wouldn't do anything with your garbled syntax. The proper
command is:

ren shdocvw.dll shdocvw.old

you have to type it exactly as shown along with the spaces.

Finally, this "fix" is the first one to try but it is not always
effective. The whole darn problem is caused by Microsoft's biggest
boo-boo ever to hopelessly tangle up Internet Explorer to the operating
system. Someone with half a brain at Microsoft should have put a stake
through IE's heart at least 7 or 8 years ago. Yep the whole dang mess
is an IE mess. If you tried the above fix an it doesn't work you can
try repairing IE from the command prompt.

Blank desktops can also be caused by improper permissions settings.

The article refers to the %SystemRoot% folder, not %SystemRoot%\system32.
In your example, that would be C:\winnt, NOT C:\winnt\system32. Renaming
the DLL in system32 is unlikely to make things better since the assumption
is that that's the good copy.

You're absolutely right, how in the heck did I let that slip by...
Thanks for the correction.
