Taskbar will disappear after a few minutes

Suddenly I note that the task bar which is set to Auto Hide,Keep on top and
has always worked that way fine, will disappear and not open when I move the
cursor over the bottom of my screen. Curiously opening the task manager
restores the taskbar, but it will then disappear again if I am not using the
computer for awhile. Rebooting also restores it, but then it will disappear
again.

Not sure why this is now happening and would appreciate any help

Well, the Auto Hide overrides both 'Lock the Taskbar' settings, so unless you
put the cursor all the way down, it will hide. The fact you can raise the
task manager says that you are making contact, but if you want it to stay up,
first uncheck Auto Hide in Properties, then apply and OK, then go fish for it.

G'Day GC,

I don't know the full answer to the your problem, but I have experienced
a similar problem where a window was almost (but not quite) full screen.

I could see the Task bar 'rising' _behind_ that window.

Thanks for the posts.

This occurs with the desktop displayed. When I can get the task bar to work,
I drop the cursor to the bottom of the screen and the taskbar pops up with
no problem. If I move the cursor away, it will autohide as it is supposed
to.If I leave the computer alone for a few minutes, and then move my cursor
to the bottom of the screen the taskbar will not reappear unlesss I reboot or
launch task manager at which point I can move the cursor to the screen bottom
and it will launch. But it will not remain launchable.

Any other ideas with this more detailed explanation? I am pretty sure I
tried to make the taskbar always visible my unchecking auto hide, but the
same thing happened. I will try this again.

Again this came out of the blue, but also shortly after I applied the latest
updates for Windows XP SP 2.

Well, I figured this out and it relates to having 15 year old daughter
playing with computer. It turns out she changed my screen saver to one that
does not work, so when the screen saver would go on, the taskbar would
disappear, but nothing else would change. I noted that with careful
observation, the hard drive would acitivate, and an hourglass would appear
and the the task bar would vanish. I also observed my screen saver had
stopped working, and when I went to check on it the problem was discovered!

Thanks

G'Day (again) GC,

Thanks for letting us know - I guess from experience we might have
known.
