icons have disappeared from taskbar

All of my taskbar icons except for McAfee Security Center and Dell Support
and the items in the language bar have disappeared from my taskbar. The arrow
to find "hidden icons" is also gone.

I have tried clicking on taskbar properties and going to 'customize'. There
I tried changing the settings on some of the icons from "Hide when inactive"
to "Always show", clicking 'apply' and 'ok' and nothing changes. I've also
tried resetting the defaults within the same taskbar properties customize
window and again, nothing changes.

This change took place after I installed an Epson scanner. One new icon
appeared in the language bar and most all other icons disappeared, as I
mentioned. I'd rather not have to uninstall the scanner or run a system
restore and reinstall the scanner.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I seem to have found a fix to this problem at:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_i.htm

I guess I'm disabling the Universal Plug and Play feature on the computer,
but at least the icons returned......

Under "Icons - Notification Area - Missing
-- Right click My Computer/Manage. Expand Services and Applications then
Click on Services. A list of services appears in the right column. Scroll
down to the SSDP and uPnP Service. Right click each, choose properties.
Change the text next to "Startup type:" to Disabled.
