Taskbar Tray Problem

I've recently installed Norton Ghost 9.0. It places an
icon in the taskbar tray. I would like to disable the
icon, but the program doesn't seem to provide any way to
deselect it. I don't want to remove the program from
starting at boot up because I intend to use it for
automatic, incremental backups. Norton Ghost "Help"
doesn't help. Does anyone know how to disable the icon?

Thanks,
Milt

If you disable it you effectively remove it from the system tray and turn
the application off. You don't want to do this. An alternative is to 'hide'
the icon so everything works ok but the icon is hidden until you choose to
use the application.
Right click on a vacant part of the taskbar and, from the drop down menu,
select properties. At the bottom of the taskbar window first make sure that
the 'hide inactive icons' check box has a tick in it, then click the
Customize button. Look down the current items list until you come across the
entry for Ghost. Click on the Ghost option. In the Behaviour column a box
will appear with a down arrow. Click the down arrow and select the 'Always
Hide' option. Finally click OK followed by Apply and then OK again. The
Ghost icon should now disappear from the system tray. If you need to use the
icon simply click the '<' button that appears on the left of the system tray
and that will show what icons are hidden. Click the ghost icon and the
application should launch.

Thanks for the reply John. I recognize that I could
use "hide when inactive", but didn't want to. Using it
just makes a big mess for me. I was hoping that there was
a way to prevent the icon for Ghost from loading to the
tray.

You can prevent it from loading at start-up if you want to. You will just
have to click the icon on the desktop or start menu when you want to use
ghost.

1/ Click Start button
2/ From the Start menu click Run
3/ In the Run dialogue box type 'msconfig' (without the quotes.
4/ The configuration window will open
5/ Click the Start-up tab
6/ Look down the list for the Ghost entry
7/ Remove the 'tick' from the box on the left next to the Ghost entry. This
will now stop Ghost running when your pc starts
8/ Click the Apply button followed by OK
9/ A message will now appear telling you to restart your pc. Press the
Restart button
10/ When your pc restarts a message box will appear telling you that you
have started windows in 'troubleshooting mode'. Right at the bottom left is
a small box marked 'do not show this message again (or something similar)
Place a tick in the box so the message doesn't appear again.
11/ You have now disabled Ghost from appearing in the system tray and
starting at start-up.
12/ When you need to use Ghost just manually open the application by
clicking the Ghost icon on the desktop.

John,

Thanks again. I tried disabling the "Ghost Tray" in
msconfig as you suggested... and it did what I wanted. The
Norton Ghost program seems to be working O.K. I'll see
what happens when I schedule an automatic incremental
backdate though. I had thought of doing that or
renaming "Ghost Tray.exe" in the program, but was hesitant
to without knowing if it would interfere with the programs
functionality. I thought that someone may have tried it
before. I appreciate your help in this matter.
