win xp taskbar hide icons (not msconfig)

Q

using win xp

how is it possible to hide icons from the taskbar.

i'm not interested in uninstalling or using msconfig. i'm looking for a

proper way to hide any icon. be it a windows security udpate icon or a
'connected icon' or a volume control or a norton ghost icon.

The closest I found was a program called Taskbar Hide. But it's got a

nasty Gui and changes aren't being saved for next time windows
restarts. so, any other ideas?

Hi,

There is no easy way. System functions can often be hidden or removed using
their respective control panel applets, though some, like the security
update icon, can not. For programs, look within the program's own
settings/options/preferences for whether or not they display. Some will have
the option, some will not. Those that do not can be controlled by a third
party app such as you have discovered, but there is not much you can do
beyond that. Niether uninstalling or msconfig would be the answer in any
case.

Right click the taskbar and choose Properties. On the Taskbar tab check the
box to "Hide inactive icons" and click Customize.

thanks,
I didn't realise that would do it. It lets me hide always or show
always, for each individual icon.
perfect.
