Taskbar & safely Remove Hardware

The taskabar \properties\customize area shows a list of current and past items.

1. How can I delete the past items?

2. The safely remove hardware icon shows as past and I would like to
reestablish it on the task bar. Also for say, my usb floppy drive, it does
not appear when the device is plugged in. In searching the messages, I found
a procedure to have it show for a specific device, or have it removed if that
device alwasy remains connected to the cpu. However the procedure and
subsequent path\ switches for windows XP does not seem to be present for
windows xp media addition??

Thank you for the quick response. Before I follow your steps, how do I
restore the safely remove hardware icon? I do not want to remove the past
items until this icon is back on the taks bar.
