What makes icons in Current Items switch to Past Items?
These are in current use, but perhaps not every day, marked 'Hide when
inactive'.
I understand that if they are not used for a period of time they are
removed from display and are shown in Past Items.
Can I control that period of time before they are no longer shown or
can I get them back from Past Items and on current display.

Also how can I clear the dross of long deleted programmes from the Past
Items section?

Anytime you remove an item from startup it winds up in past items. Shutting
down a process that runs in the background will also put the icon in past
items. Restarting the process will remove the icon from past items and
place it in Current Items.
