Taskbar Notification area icons missing

Icons for currently running applications, including
volume control, Palm Hotsync etc do not all appear in the
notification area on the right of the taskbar. Those
that do appear are listed in the "current Items" list in
the task bar properties. Those not shown are in
the "past Items" list, even though they are currently
running.

Try the following... To change the behavior of items in the System Tray
(Notification Area)
-Right-click a blank area on Taskbar, then unmark "Lock the Taskbar".
-Right-click a blank area in the System Tray and click on "Customize
Notifications..."; this gets a dialog box showing all items and their
current setting (Always hide, Hide when inactive, or Always show) to the
right.
-Scroll through items. To change an item, click on it; Note that there is
now a shaded area around the setting with an upside-down triangle. Click on
the triangle to get the three choices.
-Click on what's wanted. Repeat for each item you want changed.
-Click on OK, then Apply and OK to close.
-Re-lock the Taskbar by same method as it was unlocked.

Hi Malv,

I did a reformat and fresh install of WinXP. I also do not have the volume control on the task bar. I followed your suggestion, but the "Customize Notifications..." is greyed out. Any suggestions for this?

Thanks,
Joe

Joe,

Sorry but I'm out of ideas. I located the sound volume program via Control
Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices and went through it in Options, Properties,
etc. looking for a place to mark it where it said something like, "Show in
notification area (the system tray)", like my anti-virus program does. No
such luck :( You may be able to locate such; I was in a bit of a hurry so I
could reply one way or the other.

1) Right-click on the Start Button
2) Choose "Properties" from the popup menu
3) Select the "Taskbar" tab
4) Make sure "Hide inactive icons" is checked. When you check this option,
the "Customize..." button should ungrey.
