The taskbar next to the start button at the bottom of the screen stacks up
the opened programs vertically instead of listing them horizontally. How can
I fix it to make it list the items horizontally as it should be?

Stacks them vertically? Do you mean that the taskbar is at the left or right
side of the screen, instead of at the bottom?

If so, it's not a matter of "as it should be." Although by default the task
bar appears on the bottom of the screen, it can be on any of the sides you
prefer it on. To move it from any side to another, simply click on an unused
part of it and drag it where you want it. Be sure to click *within* it, not
on the edge; clicking on the edge and dragging will resize it.

If it won't move, it may be locked. In that case, right click on it and
uncheck "Lock the taskbar," then try again.

perhaps you mean the taskbar button grouping?

Go to control panel> taskbar and start menu and deselect the GROUP SIMILAR
TASKBAR BUTTONS

Is the taskbar placed on the right or on the left of the screen? Is so, right-click it and uncheck 'Lock the taskbar'. Then, drag the taskbar to the bottom of the screen and drop the left button of the mouse. You may want to lock it again after that.
