taskbar inactive icon arrow wont appear

I am using windows xp home sp1, and I have certain common
program icons in the taskbar set to not appear when
inactive. Suddenly over the last week, the arrow that you
click to reveal them disappered and the sound icon
disappered. If I going inot the sound control panel
applet, and reactivate the sound icon it will apear but
even if I pull open the task manager, terminate
explorer.exe and then run it nothing happens. What is
wrong?
 
Mike, have you unchecked Hide Inactive Icons. rt click on Task Bar select
Properties.
