Taskbar in Windows Classic mode

Yesterday morning, my computer was updating. Unexpectedly, the power goes
out. Around noon, when I turned it back on.. I noticed that my taskbar style
had changed. For some reason, it went from the Windows XP mode.. to Windows
Classic mode. Sounds like an easy fix, right? Wrong. When I went into
properties to try and change it back, Windows Classic mode was the only
option. So, I tried changing the theme. Low and behold, I can't do that
either. SOO, now I'm stuck with this ugly, old looking desktop.. that I
really don't want. Can anyone help me figure out WHY it changed from Windows
XP to Windows Classic.. and how in the world I can fix it?.

Make sure that the Themes service is set to Automatic and running.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Themes | Click the V next to Startup type |
Select Automatic | Click the Apply button | Click the Start button |
When the Themes service has started, click OK | Close Services

If that doesn't do it, visit here...

Read the instructions at the top.

One of these ought to help.

187. Restore Themes Functionality

187. Right hand side
Restore Luna Theme

214. Right hand side
Windows XP Style Changes to Windows Classic

271. Stuck in Classic View? Undo Now

If Luna.theme was missing and you downloaded it (187. Right hand side
Restore Luna Theme).

Luna.theme belongs in
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes
or
%windir%\Resources\Themes
-----

If XP Pro you can use Group Policy...
Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | Click OK |

Navigate to >>>

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\
Force Classic Start Menu
Set to: Not Configured

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Desktop Themes\
Load a specific visual style file or force Windows Classic
Set to: Not Configured

No solution, just a comment.

The first thing I did when I installed XP Pro was to set it to
"Classic" style. The last thing I wanted was all that "Foo-Foo" stuff
staring back at me... :>))

I guess we can file this under the "Dfferent Strokes" heading... :>))

I'm with you Tom. To me, the only "ugly desktop" on XP is the default,
which is always one of the first things I modify when installing the OS...
