Taskbar in W 98

Stan

Someone in a group I belong to posted a problem for which I gave a solution
thinking she was using XP; however, I now learned she has W 98 and so my
suggestions didn't work. I submitted this to a W 98 NG but it seems not to
be operating so I am trying here. I am including her post and perhaps
someone can solve her problem. Thanks Stan

"I wrote previously about the Task Bar being double the height, and that I
couldn't see all the icons. I was to told to click somewhere on a blank
space on the taskbar and make sure there is no checkmark at Lock the
Taskbar. When I right clicked, I got the following menu, VIEW, OPEN FOLDER,
SHOW TEXT, SHOW TITLE, CLOSE TOOLBAR, TOOLBARS, PROPERTIES. None of these
refer to the taskbar, or locking or unlocking it. I am baffled.

I also was told to get a double arrow at the top of the taskbar and drag it
down until the taskbar narrows. When I did this, dragging it to the correct
height, upon releasing it, the taskbar went right back to the double height.
When I tried dragging it down to the bottom edge of the screen, the taskbar
disappeared altogether.

I am stumped. Can anyone shed some light on what's wrong? I have a 5
year old Gateway, and Windows 98."

When the task bar is double height do you see a faint vertical separator bar
anywhere on the bottom line?

If so, grab it and drag to the top line.

Galen:
I've told her to do that but she claims when she releases the mouse the
taskbar reverts to the double size. Thanks anyway.

that could be because there is so much on the taskbar
If she took a screen dump of it and put it on imageshack it may help.

she could also psuh the registry back to a time when it was ok. e.g.
using scanreg (has it been like this for more than 3 weeks?) she
better nto waste time with that one!

or she could reinstall windows!!!

I am a little confused as to what she is actually seeing, as she states "the Task
Bar being double the height, and that I couldn't see all the icons". If it is
double height, how can she not see all the icons? Which icons is she referring
to.....the buttons for programs that are open, or the icons in the system tray by
the clock?

One thing she can try is to start the computer in Safe Mode, then try resizing the
taskbar (it may or may not work there), and then restart in normal mode. Even if
resizing does not work in Safe Mode, it may work once she reboots in normal mode.

To start Win98 in Safe Mode:
- Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu
(boot menu) appears.
OR
- Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count to bring up the boot menu.
- Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.
